Raccoon Lodge: Our North Georgia Cabin Review

The Raccoon Lodge’s location, just an hour and a half from Atlanta, make it an easy drive for a quick weekend getaway from the city. We entered the gated Wilderness View Cabin community, venturing through the community’s road to the cabin’s secluded 6 acre lot in a dense stand of pine and hardwoods.

An open, airy main floor with lofted ceilings, exposed beams and skylights welcomes guests to the cabin’s interior. Two large windows and a glass paneled door offer generous mountain views. The cabin’s rustic furnishings, reclaimed wood floors, laurel-branch stair railing and traditional hewn log and chinking give this cabin a welcoming, cozy, mountain feel.

The first floor features a spacious, fully furnished kitchen with gas range and stove, dishwasher, full sized refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot and a Keurig coffee maker. The wood-planked counter provides high-top seating for two. A round slab table attached to the counter offers seating for two additional guests. The kitchen is well appointed with plenty of dish ware, cutlery, glasses, cups, pots, pans and utensils. A sized washer and dryer are provided as well, great for mid-stay cleanup after some fun outdoors.

The open floor plan flows into the comfortable living room. A wood burning stove anchors the corner of the room. Overstuffed furniture offer a comfy spot to lounge and relax, watch the flat screen TV and DVD player, or read a good book.

The first floor also features the master bedroom, complete with a king sized bed, spacious closet and rustic antique dresser. Directly across the hall is a full bath with shower/tub combo, ceramic tile flooring and vanity top, plenty of fresh towels and travel sized soaps and shampoo.

When weather calls for indoor fun, a regulation sized pool table is provided in the upstairs loft. The loft features a drop-down murphy bed, perfect for the kids or extra guests, and space-saving for when there’s only one bedroom in use.

The loft also boasts a steam shower, excellent for an after-hike recharge, and separate water closet, sink and vanity.

The comfy cabin’s interior blends easily with the outdoor spaces, and borrows the outdoors’ picture-perfect views as a stunning backdrop to the interior. A hot tub is located on the cabin’s main level deck, offering great views and ample privacy. The deck also features a gas grill and relaxing hammock for lazy naps in the fresh mountain air.

Our favorite nearby hiking trails

The Raccoon Lodge is located near some of North Georgia’s best hiking trails. Hit the trails at nearby Fort Mountain State Park to hike a kid-friendly, 1.6 mile loop to stunning overlook views, a historic, castle-like tower and an ancient, mysterious rock wall. Fort Mountain State Park also offers the longer, more challenging Gahuti Trail, an 8.2-miler that hikes to gorgeous overlook views and a tumbling waterfall.

Another can’t-miss, family-friendly hike is the Toccoa River Swinging Bridge, a short hike on the Benton MacKaye Trail to the largest swinging bridge east of the Mississippi River.

Not quite ready to end the adventure? Visit Fall Branch Falls, an easy .5 miler on the Benton MacKaye Trail to a stunning, cascading waterfall. For a more challenging adventure, hike the legendary Conasauga River Trail along a crystal-clear river in the Cohutta Wilderness. It’s a splashy, wet, hot-weather-worthy 13-mile hike with 38 river crossings. And the Beech Bottom Trail and Jacks River Trail hike to the thundering, towering Jacks River Falls, one of the most ruggedly beautiful (and remote) waterfalls in Georgia.
