FITS Wool-Blend Running & Hiking Socks Review
FITS wool-blend socks offer soft comfort and a contoured, performance fit for running or hiking, and they're locally made in the Southeast, just north of Chattanooga. Our FITS running and hiking socks review.
We’ve loved wool-blend socks for their comfort, breathability, and odor-resistance for years. It was only a few months ago, though, that I was introduced to FITS, a contoured-fit line of wool-blend socks that are made specifically for outdoor activity and adventure. FITS line of specific-activity socks customize fit with different weights for different climates and different fits for specific activities, from road running to trail running to hiking.
FITS Wool-Blend Running & Hiking Socks: Our Review
Having heard legends of FITS socks’ comfort and performance on the trail, I was psyched to try a variety of styles from the FITS line. Across the lineup, FITS wool-blend socks are contoured to snugly fit feet while retaining comfort, and adding protection from slipping or bunching during athletic activity.
FITS design technology was evident the first time I tried a pair on: my foot slid easily into the sock, and then locked in place. Over a number of miles on the trail, the socks didn’t bunch, slide or shift in my boots or shoes. And the socks’ soft blend of wool, nylon, poly and lycra wrapped my feet with a performance fit, providing arch support, a cushioned, deeply form-fit heel and contoured toe area.
FITS socks are available in a variety of weights, heights and a number of activity-specific fits (not to mention great colors, including solids and stripes). I had the chance to try several, including the Light Hiker Crew, Medium Hiker Crew, Ultra Light Trail Quarter and the Light Runner Low.
My favorites? The Hiker Crew is ultra-comfortable with a cushioned heel, cushioned sole and noticeable arch support. I found the Medium Hiker Crew to be a great weight for Georgia’s relatively moderate winters, striking the balance of warmth and breathability on hikes down into the single digits. And in springtime and onward, the Light Hiker Crew offers much of the same comfort as the Medium without the extra insulation, staying comfortable on active hikes into the 80s and beyond.
Another favorite of mine: the FITS Light Runner Low, a performance-focused wool-blend running sock that’s comfortably thin, breathes easily and, despite its low height, resists bunching or falling at the heel. I admit, while I’m a veteran with wool while hiking, I’m new to wool blends in a running sock. I’m thoroughly impressed, though, by the comfort, odor resistance and blister protection offered by the FITS wool blend. And the cushioning in the FITS Runner is noticeable on each impact, adding comfort to my lightweight running shoes.
Across the line, FITS socks dry quickly, fight odor and breathe well, keeping my feet dry and cool as I pound down the miles. My only complaint: like many wool socks and wool blends, the wool tends to pill into small clumps after a number of wears – though the pills don’t seem to impact the sock’s comfort or performance. FITS are some of the most comfortable, best-fitting activewear socks I’ve worn. And when put to the ultimate test, FITS fought odor effectively across a multi-day backpacking journey without washing in between wears – a testament to their odor-resistant ability.
FITS socks are made locally in the Southeast, just north of Chattanooga in Niota, Tennessee. And they’re not only made in the USA, they sport a great American heritage as well: their parent company has been manufacturing in the Niota mill since 1902.
FITS Performance Wool-Blend Socks: Bottom Line
FITS is a quality sock that’s made in the USA, designed with a contoured fit that provides unparalleled comfort and performance on trail. FITS aren’t cheaply priced by sock standards, but we found their on-trail comfort and exceptional fit to be well worth their price, and the opportunity to support a company that’s manufactured socks for over a century locally in the Southeast adds to their appeal.
