LOWA Renegade GTX Mid hiking boot review

Stability and dependable traction: the LOWA Renegade GTX Mid is a high-end hiking boot that’s well-equipped with a waterproof Gore-Tex lining and a grippy Vibram Evo outsole. Our trail-tested review.

After reading review after glowing review of the LOWA Renegade GTX Mid, I’ve had this boot high on my list to test. And after hundreds of miles wearing the Renegade GTX in some really tough terrain and tough weather, I’m feeling the LOWA love.

The Renegade GTX is a mid-height boot that delivers some serious traction and stability. It’s wrapped in a water-resistant leather upper, sealed with a breathable, waterproof Gore-Tex inner, and footed with a grip-tastic Vibram Evo sole.

Our LOWA Renegade GTX Mid hiking boot review

The boot was trail ready, right out of the box. From the first wear, the Renegade GTX was comfortable and supportive, offering a great mix of rigidity, control, flexibility and comfort in the first few miles. I’ve worn the boot through a wide range of distances and terrain, and while it tends to be one of my top choices for higher-mileage days or multi-day backpacking trips, the boot excels on shorter to mid-range hikes, too. It’s a great choice for a weekend of adventure on the Appalachian Trail, or a wet, cold-weather adventure on the Pinhoti Trail at Bear Creek. And paired with a quality trail sock, I’ve experienced zero hotspots or blisters in this boot.

The boot’s comfort is exceptional. An amply-padded footbed offers superb shock protection when trail conditions turn tough. The seamless Gore-Tex lining lets moisture escape, keeping my feet dry while preventing water from penetrating the boot from the outside. And the boot’s gusseted tongue design is one of the best I’ve tested: it’s extremely effective at keeping out trail debris. On full-day adventures, there’s nothing worse than stopping to clean out my boot (or dealing with that nagging feeling that I should stop to remove the grit, but trying hard to ignore it). The Renegade GTX tongue excels at keeping debris where it belongs: on the trail.

On the outside, the water-repellant leather upper offers a first defense against water, mud, and muck. It’s become one of my trail-tested favorites for foul weather: ice, sleet, slush, chilly creek crossings or wet, cold days on the trail. Thanks to ample insulation and a Gore-Tex lining, my feet stay dry and warm. To my preference (and I admit, my feet seem to run warm), this boot is an awesome trail choice for fall, winter and spring wear, but it’s a little too insulated for Georgia’s scorching summertime heat. Throughout the rest of the year, though, it’s an excellent boot that delivers some exceptional comfort and control on the trail. It’s a cool-to-cold weather hiker that’s fully Cohutta Wilderness-worthy and dependably waterproof.

On the bottom, the Renegade GTX is finished with a Vibram Evo outsole with grippy, aggressive lugs that offer great traction on a wide range of terrain.

The Renegade GTX Mid features a full-length shank for dependable stability. The feel on foot is rigid, yet comfortable, offering the feeling of sure-footedness without sacrificing too much in the way of flexibility. The boot offers great foot support, especially under a moderate load: I’ve comfortably tested it on heavier-load, 25-30 pound backpacking adventures and appreciated the boot’s stability and support. And thanks to the stability system, the Renegade GTX holds my feet in place, even on aggressive uphills and downhills, without shifting.

LOWA Renegade GTX hiking boot review: bottom line

The Renegade GTX delivers exceptional foot support and stability but manages to still feel moderately light on the trail. It’s a dependable, rugged, comfortable boot for the South’s cool and cold seasons, and the boot’s gusseted tongue design and Gore-Tex lining are ultra-effective at keeping my feet dry and debris-free. With excellent traction and grip, this boot is one of my top choices for cool-weather, heavy-mileage days on the trail.
