Hike the Arabia Mountain Cascade Trail to small cascading waterfalls before looping the Wilburn Farm Trail to an old barn, farmhouse ruins and a small pond.
The Cascade Trail and Wilburn Farm Trail trek some of Arabia Mountain’s lesser-traveled trails on the western expanses of the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area near Atlanta.
These trails hike a figure-eight loop, trailing to a stream that cascades over open stretches of rolling granite. Departing the cascades, the Wilburn Farm Trail treks to a farmstead with an old barn, rope swing and tumbled remains of a farmhouse. And before looping back to the trailhead via a paved PATH Foundation trail, the hike visits the grassy, shady shores of a pond home to fish and croaking amphibians. It’s a fantastic family hike, mixing natural beauty with history and a chance to spot some wildlife on the trail.
Arabia Mountain Cascade & Wilburn Farm Trails: the hike
The hike departs Arabia Mountain’s Evans Mill Road trailhead (view maps and driving directions), briefly following the paved PATH Foundation trail east before turning right, darting into the shady forest on the unpaved Cascade Trail. The sound of rushing water grows louder as the trail meanders through the forest, reaching the rushing cascades of Pole Bridge Creek at .2 mile.
Departing the cascades, the trail follows the meandering creek, catching downstream vistas of its continuously tumbling water. The Cascade Trail arcs westbound at .3 mile, departing the creek’s shore and gaining elevation through a rocky, grassy forest. Occasional smooth, bald rock outcrops punctuate the coniferous forest on the sides of the trail.
The hike crosses the paved PATH Foundation trail at .75 mile, beginning to hike the Wilburn Farm Trail on the far side. The trail continues its upward ascent, switching back through rocky forest. The hike veers right at 1.2 miles, trekking through a cleared, grassy meadow and past a fire pit to approach the remains of Wilburn Farm.
The hike veers right at 1.5 miles, arcing west and then south in a descent toward the Wilburn Farm barn. The trail reaches the barn and nearby ruins of the Wilburn farmhouse at 1.6 miles.
The Wilburn Farm Trail hikes southbound, departing the farmstead and reaching the banks of a small, grassy pond at 1.75 miles. Vibrant green grasses line the shore, and the trees on the opposite bank reflect in the pond’s surface.
The trail gains elevation departing the pond, hiking southbound through a series of meanders and wide switchbacks. The Wilburn Farm Trail crests at 2.1 miles before beginning a winding descent, reaching a trail junction at 2.3 miles. At the junction, the hike turns right, hiking westbound on the Boomerang Trail to meet the paved PATH Foundation trail at 2.45 miles. The hike turns right on the PATH trail, winding over the paved trail northwest, reaching the trailhead and completing the hike at 3.25 miles.
Note: slippery rocks and fast moving water can be extremely dangerous! Please don’t climb, stand on, swim near, or jump from any waterfall.
